"THE INTERSEXUAL... HOMOSECTION... INTERSECTION!"

“In & Out” is a 1997 Kevin Kline vehicle in which a small town teacher’s life is turned upside-down on the eve of his wedding when a former student wins an Oscar and outs him as gay on national television. Streisand is the running gag in the movie, and it’s very, very funny. The film’s writer, Paul Rudnick, had a huge hit in my New York theatre days with his play “Jeffrey” (which was also filmed), and “In & Out” is an equally clever charmer with a biting commentary on the entertainment industry — and it has some of the best movie lines in the entirety of the 90s. The cast is terrific. Joan Cusak steals the movie as Kline’s long-suffering fiancee. And while the pretext of the movie involves a man coming to terms with his sexuality, it’s really about the love, caring, and support of a community.

ASIDE

[Kevin Kline was/is one of the most talented and versatile performers working in theatre and movies during that era. He moved with incredible deftness from one medium to-the-other, starring opposite Meryl Streep in “Sophie’s Choice” (an incredible performance), with Linda Ronstadt onstage (and in the movie) in “Pirates of Penzance”, and classic comedies like “A Fish Called Wanda” for which he won the Oscar. Kevin Kline has given so many outstanding performances that it’s impossible to pick just a few, but his version of Hamlet’s advice to the players (from the 1990 Tony Awards) is stage magic. [Kathleen Turner hosted the Tony’s that year, and she introduced Kline. She was a smoking hot superstar at that point and I was so enamored of her that I did a couple days on a dreadful movie she was in called “V.I. Warshawski” just so I could meet her — and she didn’t disappoint; she was every inch the grand star. We filmed at Wrigley Field just a block or so from my Chicago apartment, and I got to spend the afternoon in the Cubs’ locker room. Where else do you get to do stuff like this?] I went to see Shakespeare’s “Timon of Athens” in ’93 at the Lyceum Theatre on Broadway and just as the lights went down who should pop out of nowhere into the aisle seat beside me but Kevin Kline — and so, of course, I don’t remember a single minute of that show. Literally nothing (in fact I had to dig out a diary to even recall what the show was). My focus was on Kevin Kline and the ginormous man-crush I was enjoying during those couple of hours we sat touching arm-to-arm.]
