Sunday Macabre

"NIGHT GALLERY"
Every Sunday night at 9:30 p.m from 1969 through 1973, the great master of the macabre, Rod Serling, stood before a different set of bizarro paintings and introduced the horror stories of the week. It was a nifty concept, and it had always-changing styles — so I loved it. And from first grade to fourth grade, Sunday nights before bed was "Night Gallery" time. It was the creepiest way to launch a week, but I lived for it.
"Night Gallery" (1969-1973) — Revisiting the Gallery: A Look Back
Rod Serling was a celebrity writer with his own extremely vibrant cult by the late 60s (having commandeered “The Twilight Zone” to international acclaim), and he apparently only lent his persona to “Night Gallery” without a whole lot of affection for the affair. It was still a terrific series, with a wide variety of story interpretations and styles, whose pilot episode famously launched a young Steven Spielberg’s directing career, and whose four-year run helped keep half the old studio contract players employed.

Serling might not have had such a good time with it, but we sure did. I never missed it. Since it was the last thing on before the news, everyone in our house was scrambling about getting ready for bed while I sat steadfast, nose-to-TV-screen, never missing a frame. "Night Gallery" would be the last thing I saw on Sunday night before awakening to a fresh week on Monday, and I etched the events of the week into my brain with its not-too-threatening storylines, sort of dumping out the clutter of the week gone-by and making room for the week ahead.
THE FAMOUS INTRO
The opening is a television classic.
